Engagement in employability building activities in higher education-barriers and impact
Universities offer a range of curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities intended to develop student employability, such as career counselling, internships, networking events, and mentoring. Despite considerable work on how to design and facilitate employability-building activities, there is more to be learned on barriers to participation and the impact of different activities on aspects of individual employability.
This session shares findings from a study of 324 graduates of two universities, one based in Western Australia and the other in Victoria. It explores graduates’ engagement in a range of employability-building activities during their university years, barriers impeding participation and how well activities developed graduates’ sense of professional self, networks, and ability to secure work. The project findings will be discussed and should interest those responsible for designing and delivering employability-building activities in higher education.
