Utilizing Creative Strategies For Career Decision Making
This is a VIRTUAL EVENT:
Career practitioners serve a variety of clients with career decision-making questions and concerns that are influenced by clients’ diverse experiences, skills, contexts, and preferences for processing information and solving problems. Consequently, career practitioners will benefit from having a well-equipped toolbox of intervention strategies that can be matched with client needs.
To support expansion of career practitioner repertoires, presenters of this webinar will offer creative strategies derived from art therapy practices that address career decision-making learning as defined by Cognitive Information Processing theory but common in other career theories, in the areas of self-knowledge; options knowledge; decision-making methods; and metacognition.
For each decision-making component, art-based interventions will be presented, explained, and compared to more traditional career development interventions frequently utilized.
For example, regarding self-knowledge strategies, career values “portraits” and their outcomes will be compared to values card-sorts, and traditional values assessments such as the Career One Stop, Work Values Matcher.
Advantages and disadvantages of intervention for each area will be reviewed, and considerations regarding integrating both creative and traditional practices in work with clients will be outlined. As with any new skill or tool that career practitioners acquire, it is essential to evaluate and ensure practitioner competency in implementing the intervention prior to offering it to clients.
In this regard, presenters will identify ethical considerations regarding utilizing creative methods and managing artworks as represented in the Standards of Professional Practice in the Code of Ethics of the Australian, New Zealand, and Asian Creative Art Therapy Association, Inc. and CICA Code of Ethics.
Presenters will emphasize the importance of understanding the qualities and evocative nature of art materials; inquiry processes that support client reflections and reduce practitioner assumptions regarding interpretation; and the roles of artmaking and viewing art products within a career counseling relationship.
Finally, during this session, attendees will be invited to engage in one art-based intervention and to identify similarities and differences between the creative process and a more traditional process they have utilized in the past. Additionally, participants will be encouraged to identify further information and/or support they may need before applying creative interventions to applicable cases.
