Narrative Career Counselling: Storied Perspective and Processes
This is a VIRTUAL event:
Narrative approaches, such as the storied approach (Brott, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, 2019), provide career counselling opportunities to illuminate the client’s story through dynamic life roles.
The CICA (2022) core competencies addressed in this webinar will include career development theory, communication and interpersonal skills, ethical practice, diversity and inclusion, information and resources, and professional practice application.
The foundation of the storied approach is to create a counselling environment that is respectful, positive, and cooperative through a high-level of communication and interpersonal skills. The practitioner-client process of co-constructing, de-constructing, and re-constructing the story illuminates and opens up the experiences, influences, and perspectives for the story context leading to constructing the next life chapters.
Various resources support the counselling process through dialogue, standardised and qualitative assessments, and interactive activities.
Assessments continue to hold value as cognitive tools in organizing the client’s self-report information into models and frameworks that illuminate the story. Instead of matching the person to the job, clients can co-construct life through experiences and meanings, de-construct life as contextual and informative, and re-construct a mattering in life that is adaptable and sustainable, and to construct a prototype of the next chapters in finding a life. A variety of tools can be used to guide clients through the storied approach process.
A narrative constructive framework in career counselling positions the client as the author of a subjective meaning-making story. The session will include an overview of the influential narrative perspectives in career counselling, focusing on the storied approach.
The dynamic processes for co-constructing, de-constructing, re-constructing, and constructing will be highlighted by envisioning career through one’s dynamic life roles.
An experiential component will engage participants with techniques and innovative ways to blend qualitative and standardized assessments into the counselling process.
Please bring 3 pieces of paper and coloured pencils or crayons with you to this session.
